Many years ago I worked for several oil and gas exploration companies as a joint venture landman. This title essentially means that I was responsible for negotiating various legal agreements between my company and other companies that wanted to go into an area of acreage delineated by the geologists and geophysicists. These areas of land were outlined on a plat and represented what they believed might have hydrocarbons.

In many cases, by the time we presented the projects to others we had already purchased the leases that encompassed the geological structure.

In any event, this one particular drilling program in East Texas consisted of 5 deep wells (Smackover formation), that was both expensive and risky - so we looked for other oil and gas partners that had the financial backing to participate in drilling these wells with our company.

As it turned out, one of the partners that joined was Atlantic Richfield Company based in Houston, Texas, but the district office in New Orleans, Louisiana was responsible for committing to outside generated drilling deals. So, the negotiations proceeded with their land department.

The humorous event for me was when during these negotiations 3 or 4 of Atlantic Richfield Company's corporate attorneys were continuously flying back and forth between Houston and their New Orleans office to aid their landmen there with the legal wording of our negotiated trade.

So, my boss and I would listen to their requests over the telephone and either agree, or suggest some alternative changes to the wording. I would walk back to my "cubicle," sit down in front of my keyboard and monitor, and insert the changes to the agreement and fax it back to New Orleans - without depending on anyone else to create the agreement and having to travel anywhere.

What's the point? Knowledge combined with the ability to transmit information at a very low cost is a tremendous enabler to the individual sitting somewhere in front of a keyboard and monitor - just as I am while writing this.

But, today I am also using the internet and the world wide web

Please read the article "The World Wide Web as an Engineering Paradigm" in order to take some of the "mystery" out of the internet and world wide web.

These two combined with the subject knowledge, or where to acquire it is a tremendous boon to "individual empowerment" and "enabler" to reach out through collaboration and sharing of information on community issues that have meaning and importance to others looking for the way to make a difference in this ever-increasing world population that at times seems too overwhelming to believe a single person can make a difference in its direction.

This method of communication levels the playing field against the "goliaths" of corporations, organizations, and governments. It's sort of like the biblical story of "David and Goliath," or the use of a "cheater" to give you more leverage - the internet coupled with the world wide web.

This is the what I mean whenever I use the terms of "enabler" and "empowerment" of the individual in the digital age (coupled with the internet and the world wide web).
