I believe that "Our Story" is actually "America's Story." The real story is that the heroes of character and truth are slowly disappearing right in front of our eyes, everywhere - the extinction of the American father. What's left is ..... well, is it conceivable to consider certain Americans, possibly our neighbor, as an "enemy." Well, if you read the news .... yes! I believe you can expand upon Professor Russel H. Stolfi's remark about the Vietnamese enemy:

"The ultimate enemy of the Vietnamese government and the Marine Corps was everywhere, yet nowhere. ..."

- Captain Russel H. Stolfi (who in 1967 held a doctor of philosophy degree in history, and was an Assistant Professor of History at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California), USMCR, Historical Branch, G-3 Division, Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps, 1968, "U. S. Marine Corps, Civic Action Efforts in Vietnam, March 1965 - March 1966.," http://www.au.af.mil/au/awc/awcgate/usmchist/civic.txt

to:

"The ultimate enemy of the American people is everywhere, yet nowhere"

Can an American be an enemy of another American... can he be your neighbor? I think so.

Well, just read the newspaper. The worst of the worst surfaces with another murder, rape, or child molestation.

There are plenty out there that are not "that far out there," but are still a threat to the values so aptly put to words for us by Robert Fulghum in "All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten."

The virtues outlined in Mr. Fulghum are not new by any means. Rather, they were taught in the schools and at home. These same "values" and "principles" were then handed down from family to family as good and important character of soul to learn and practice everyday.

You know that the beginning is the most important part of any work, especially in the case of a young and tender thing; for that is the time at which the character is being formed and the desired impression is more readily taken ... Shall we just carelessly allow children to hear any casual tales which may be devised by casual persons, and to receive into their minds ideas for the most part the very opposite of those which we should wish them to have when they are grown up?

We cannot ... Anything received into the mind at that age is likely to become indelible and unalterable; and therefore it is most important that the tales which the young first hear should be models of virtuous thoughts ...

Then will our youth dwell in a land of health, amid fair sights and sounds, and receive the good in everything; and beauty, the effluence of fair works, shall flow into the eye and ear, like a health-giving breeze from a purer region, and insensibly draw the soul from the earliest years into likeness and sympathy with the beauty of reason.

There can be no nobler training than that. - Plato's "Republic"

So what are some of the traits of good character?

Responsibility. Courage. Compassion. Loyalty. Honesty. Friendship. Persistence. Hard Work. Self-Discipline. Faith.

But, is seems to me that there has been a slow .... slow ... and ever so slow change in the world around us. Today many of us that hold these truths of good character are experiencing a rapid acceleration of the disappearance of men with these values and virtues. And, community-interest has been replaced with self-interest.

Don't see them?

Well, why would the "wolf" want to look like a "wolf" to the "sheep?"

If it smells like a wolf, sounds like a wolf, acts like a wolf, walks like a wolf - it is a wolf!

They come from all walks of life. Some a highly educated, stealthy, and calculating. But, sooner or later, they will attack. I might be something as insignificant in the whole scheme of things as trying to sell a product to you using lies and deception. Maybe, it's Bill Gates using patent law to further perpetuate his monopoly position in the computer industry at the expense of the American public. Or, maybe it's the academic researchers supported by the American public's tax dollars turning over the publishing rights to certain "elite" publishing companies to be turned right around and sold back to American universities at "monopolistic" price schedules. Or, maybe, it's certain highly regarded individuals in the education market that author books about what is wrong with America's school system and outlining what need's to be done - but, you have to buy the book first! Or, maybe it's the "rappers" singing lyrics of abuse to women and becoming millionaires, virtually overnight! All, with hard-earned American dollars.

Come on, now! Some of us know who you are and what you are up to. If we ever get the upper hand - we will not forget!

Seek, and you will find. It's everywhere! Right under our noses!

Look and you will see. What will you see? A common thread of "self-interest." You can't hide this - it has to come out and reveal itself. Some, are masters of the trade of deception and lies. But, look and you "will" see!

Come on, now. Your exaggerating! Society has always had it’s share of liars, cheaters, and so forth, and so on.

I know, you're right, there. But, I believe this group of folks will become the "rule," not the exception. You "rule." You "control." You "control." You "dictate." Freedom will be for the "rulers," slavery for the majority of society.

No, not shackles and chains. But, a new, high-tech sort of slavery. A new world order. Where access to "Information and Knowledge" creates wealth. And, we all know, wealth brings power right along with it. And, possessing that power will determine whether you are a party of the haves, or the have-nots! You snooze, you lose. You snooze and you end up in their "pool" of labor. You know, the mundane chores. Somebody has to do it. And, the stone continues to roll. Your labor cost will be based on the "global" cost! Why pay you $20 per hour when you can get the same labor for say, $10 - or even, $5!

Well, that's not fair! I have bills to pay! I can't make it on that!

Oh, you'll make it because you have no other option! Your standard of living will resemble someone in a third-world country.

You see? Global means access to labor, materials, products, etc. - whatever is needed to conduct commerce. I don't think most Americans consider themselves in this way. They think along lines of the "us" and the "them" line of reasoning of the past.

America is heading into the future of the Information Age. Access to information and knowledge has been forever changed by the computer and the networking effect of the Internet. And, that access is crucial to the new economy, your livelihood, and your children's livelihood in the future when the parting of the sea of traditional commerce becomes much more apparent to most of us.

if you don't keep up with understanding the technology today that is replacing the Industrial Age of products and capital, then you will be "unlinked," so to speak. The ironic part of it is that education and life-long learning is required to move from one class to another in the Information Age. You refuse to participate? Well, there's plenty of others that actually "enjoy" to learn - believe it, or not. If you've "made yours" and set for the rest of your life, you'll survive comfortably. But, the others will end up in the "pool" - of labor.

Well, back to the wolf. Why is it so important to know who the wolves are?

Well, the wolves want to "control." They have their "self-interest" agendas to pursue. Granted, there's probably fewer of them around (but increasing in numbers). Information, knowledge, power - they all ultimately aid in acquiring control.

Control over what, you ask? Control over you!!

Don't mind being controlled? Well, I guess it's OK if it's in your best interest, but what if it isn't? What if this new American male is the controller? Think about that for a while!

Oh, so you don't think it can happen? What if you are wrong? What are the consequences?

Well, you better be set for the rest of your life, or otherwise you better get on the band wagon. Instead of resisting and refusing to be a part of the new economy, you better take education and life-long learning seriously!

As to the enemy within, you fight to win!

OK, I see you need a break from this, so go here for some comical relief for poetry about the Shepard, David rising against the giant, Goliath.

You use the technology to your advantage. You search them out using the Internet. You create communities of "trust." You band with other communities and you remove them from positions of power in society. You start with the government - our government. You know, the government that was formed over 200 years ago by some pretty bright guys from England. They found a piece of ground worth fighting for! They left us tons of manuscripts, journals, writings, etc. that confirm what compromises where made and by whom, to come up with the document that is today being used to hide from us. The Bill of Rights and the Constitution of the United States!

Well, hold on there fella! That's what defines America. That's the "holy grail" you're talking about.

Well, it has been the written word that supposedly entitles guaranteeing of our freedom I know, but it needs to be re-evaluated. And, probably, will someday! Guess who's going to be in control of that? If it's us - OK, if it's them?

Oh, that can't happen! Well, look at the decisions being made by our local governments, our state governments, our national government. Executive, judicial, and legislative branches - all of them! It is happening. And, I believe it will continue. Right there in front of us! Right before our very own eyes and noses! In a grand display of contradiction to the values and principles of human rights set out in the Bill of Rights of the Constitution of the United States of America by our founding fathers. Yes, they are commonly referred to as the founding "fathers"! Fathers that were focused on the best interest of the nation of "communities" - the public they were representing, the value systems they were representing, and the principles of life they were representing. Sure, there might have been some "self-interest" considerations, like copyright and patent laws that encourage monopoly (for a limited time period). But, overall, they did a pretty good job of negotiating and drafting a document that has kept us going for over 200 years.

Do you think the document would look the same if they had any idea of the future of America? Well, first of all, it would take an army of lawyers to do it! And, the invoice submitted to the courts for payment would dwarf any we see today. Who pays for it? Well, it has to be paid, doesn't it? Well, since I have never handled any accounts payable or receivables for a fee invoiced to the government I couldn't say for sure. But, I would bet my last dollar that Bill Gates doesn't pay for it! The taxpayer pays for it. When the fees go up, our taxes go up. When the costs to run the government go up, our taxes go up - local, state, and federal. They all go up. Never to settle back down. Never, again.

How are they doing this? The wolves may be fewer in numbers, but much more a threat to a bunch of sheep.

Why? Because a sheep eats grass and a wolf eats sheep!

( Well, for those analytical minds - scientists, lawyers, etc. - possibly I should say this with a caveat - this conclusion is purely speculation on my part. I admit it. I have not personally researched this issue. However, in my 50 plus years to date have not heard, or read of, any news report of a sheep eating a wolf. And, further, if a reporter ever tries to slip that by me using his (or her, as the case may be) weapon of choice, lies and deception, then I just won't believe it. No, no blind faith here. The safest defense to use against these guys is a lot (a whole lot) of skepticism. In any event, I would have to "see" it with my own two eyes before I "believe" it. But, if you would like to email me with such a report along with your name, physical address, telephone number, place of employment, a copy of the report, images, etc.- you know, "facts" substantiating your claim!!!)

All right, let's continue. "Who" protects the sheep? Well, I looked it up online and here's what I have to report. The facts. Go ahead, check me out - look it up for yourself.

Here it is. The shepherd tends to the protection and well-being of the sheep. Sort of like, our founding "fathers" took care of us. Or, you can choose any of the following that suit you.

1. shepherd - a clergyman who watches over a group of people. Clergyman, man of the cloth, reverend - a member of the clergy and a spiritual leader of the Christian Church.

2. shepherd - a herder of sheep (on an open range); someone who keeps the sheep together in a flock

And, to be politically correct - Shepherdess - a woman shepherd.

And, for this article I'm going to include "shepherdess" - a woman shepherd and therefore, sheep (children) without a shepherd.

Now, to the heart of the matter. "What" do they do for the sheep?

1. watch over like a shepherd, as a teacher of her pupils. Ward, guard - watch over or shield from danger or harm; protect; "guard my possessions while I'm away"

2. shepherd - - tend as a shepherd, as of sheep or goats, have care of or look after, "She tends to the children"

Now, I could go over the issue of who decides and picks the shepherd, but since this is my article I decide not to go there. That's were the politics and power struggles amongst the owners and managers of the sheep take place. And, this article may never be given a chance to express "my" views.

OK, You say - get on with it!

Now, it is absolutely crucial to the survival of the sheep that the sheepherder (and, for the rest of this article sheepherder shall also include the term shepherdess, as well as my new term, shepherdess, for all intents and purposes herein contained) must be vigilant, alert, and never, ever, sleep on his post. And, he must know what he's looking for - the wolf.

Now, with no deception on the wolf's part the Shepard can spot a wolf a mile away because the Shepard always positions himself on the highest part of the range for lookout purposes.

No, the really hard part is when the smart wolf is impersonating a sheep. He really looks just like any other sheep!

How can the shepherd spot him? Well, if he's approaching from afar then that calls for caution. He counts his sheep again to ensure its not one of his herd that has wandered off. Even, though he knows that sheep customarily stay close together. And, besides the shepherd dog helps to keep them together in a group, or community.

So, the sheepherder goes and checks the sheep out. If it is indeed a sheep, then by all means let him join the herd. If he's not a sheep then he's a wolf.

"Are you sure he's a wolf?"

Well, I feel like Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart must have felt when he struggled with conclusively defining "obscenity" in Jacobellis v. Ohio, 878 U.S. 184 (1964), and wrote the following:

."... but I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of material I understand to be embraced within that shorthand description (of prior obscenity case); and perhaps I could never succeed in intelligibly doing so. But I know it when I see it...."

So, if it smells like a wolf, sounds like a wolf, acts like a wolf, walks like a wolf - then it is a wolf

And, to think the wolves are already amongst the herds. There right before our eyes, right under our noses. Will the shepherd snoozed they entered the herd.

What's to stop this? Why is it happening? How is it happening? What's to become of American values over the next 50 years? What can I do?

I really don't have any idea, but I believe you must first know and be capable of identifying the enemy from within. You need a plan of action and proceed in an orderly and effective method of "weeding" them out.

The wolf is smart. Do you have to be as intelligent as him. No, not necessary, but you need to be as proficient in weaponry as he is, or else you stand no chance of survival.

Hopefully, further advances in the information age will help to empower communities of "trusted" individuals to collaborate, communicate, and go to war against these enemies.

I just can't help but believe that in a major way the precursor to this focus on self-interest can be to a large degree traced back to the circumstances surrounding what I refer to as the "extinction of fatherhood in America." Maybe, it's the focus on "material things," or it's a "control" issue - I don't know, but they are just not wired the same anymore.

Oh, sure, they give "lip service" to what all they've done for their children, even as some are walking out the door to start over, leaving their children behind like trash tossed out the car window. Those that don't walk out, but stick around, all the while continuing with their life of self-involvement, shame on you. The effects of this on the children of America are devastating. The pain and lack of self-worth caused by fathers that are in it solely for themselves just has to tear at the heart and spirit of the American youth of today. OK, it's not rape, it's not physical abuse, and it's not murder, but it's as if the fathers of today are shooting a bullet through the heart and soul of the American youth, nonetheless - never to recover from the disabilities caused by this. I believe the exponential effects of this is finding its way deep into the very fabric of American culture - to be passed down from generation to generation.

The cancer of self-interest is spreading throughout the fabric of the traditional culture of America. Take what you can, when you can, and wherever you can. Everything is virtually disposable now. What you don't want or need, just throw it away. The "me's" win, the "we's" lose.

If you just consider this group of society alone - let them reproduce for a couple of generations and continue with the same pattern of destruction then the American society as we have known it, crumbles before our children's, or their children's eyes.

Don't think it's happening in America?

Well, I suppose you could be right. Or, you could be wrong. Or, maybe "you" are whom this article is about!

Who's to blame? Well, he's hard to find because he's always gone!

The "new," but certainly not improved, American male. Fatherhood disappears and will it the values and principles of my father and others of his generation. They "talked the talk," but "walked the walk." To my father I say thank you for loving me for the short time you were here with us. To those unfortunate souls of American youth - your pain, is my pain. May you rise above your disabilities and exercise your responsibilities of fatherhood, for yourselves, your family, and all of America. - "The Enemy Within: The Extinction of Fatherhood in America," Larry Blakeley, May 21, 2004
