Headquarters 831st Combat Support Group (TAC) United States Air Force George Air Force Base, California 92393 Office of the Commander 23 Jul 1965 Mrs. Violet M. Blakeley 1317 Shelton Street Abilene, Texas Dear Mrs. Blakeley It is with deep personal feeling that I express my regret for the loss of your son, Captain Roy J. Blakeley. I know you are anxious to learn the details of his tragic accident, however, the complete circumstances are not yet available. Through this letter I will give you what information we now have and as soon as possible, forward a second letter containing the results of the investigation currently underway. Roy was on temporary duty at Da Nang Air Base, Republic of Viet Nam. Upon returning from a mission, his aircraft experienced mechanical difficulties and he was forced to attempt an emergency landing at Chu Lai Airfield, which is a United States Marine Corp facility in South Viet Nam. While landing, the aircraft went out of control, left the runway and exploded, resulting in his instantaneous death. As an officer and as an individual, Roy earned the respect of all who knew him. In his performance of duty, he consistently demonstrated outstanding ability. His proficiency as a pilot was well known and recognized by his fellow officers. His loss will be deeply felt by all of us. I join the officers and men of the 479th Tactical Fighter Wing in extending my sincere sympathy. If I can be of any further service, please do not hesitate to contact me at the above address. Sincerely Anthony Sgro Lt Colonel, USAF Commander
